Organize Your Closet

Clothing folded and stacked on shelves

For most, organizing your closet is a tedious and overwhelming task. It can be an all day process and parting with some of your clothes that bring back memories can actually be really emotional. However, I always urge everyone to give their closet a good look through every few months. The more cluttered it gets the more you actually end up wearing the same things over and over again without realizing it. Everyone has their own ways of organizing. Whether is be by color or type, it’s really all personal preference. The most important thing is that it’s organized in a way that you know exactly where everything is and that it’s all visible to you. We all know the saying, “Out of site, out of mind.” That really applies to almost everything! So here is my tips of organizing your closet and the way that I keep it all year round.

FIRST, DO SOME SPRING CLEANING EVEN IF IT’S NOT SPRINGTIME

This is the hardest part, the beginning. Not only to get started on the actual process but having to decide what to get rid of. I have always gone through my clothes every few months so it’s easier and takes much less time, otherwise I feel extremely overwhelmed.

The deciding process is simple however. First get rid of what you really don’t like anymore. Everyone’s style changes over the years and the things we would have worn a few years ago may not be what we like anymore. Once that has been taken care of I always look critically at items that I haven’t worn in the past year and see why I haven’t. I don’t mean fancy party dresses or anything of that nature, those we all know are kept to the side. I’m more focused on actual sweaters and jeans that have been laying there for months on end and I still keep away from them. Figure out whether you’re not wearing it because you honestly forgot about them, they’re not comfortable, or you just don’t like the fit. If there’s nothing that a quick alteration won’t fix then I say get rid of it. It’s just taking up space for what can be used for new and exciting clothes.

SECOND, DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO ORGANIZE

As I’ve said before, if you want to organize by category or by color this is truly your decision. I prefer to organize by category. You can then break it down by color but if I’m being honest it’s really difficult to keep the standards that way and can become a hassle after a while. The reason I prefer category and not color is because things will get lost if they are categorized by color alone. If you put all white tops together, finding a long sleeve or short sleeve tee will be difficult, especially if they are folded. All you can see is a stack of white in front of you and every time you want to pull something out you have to pull the whole pile out. If you have it separated by type, then you know if you want to wear a short sleeve tee, they are all within the same stack. This way you just look at which color you want and violà, all done!

THIRD, KNOW HOW TO OPTIMIZE SPACE WITH PROPER FOLDING

Believe me, almost every job I’ve ever had was a fashion retail position so I’ve spent hours at a time folding and it can get sooo boring! But if you want to organize it properly then you have to fold and make sure everything is good and neat. Not only will you be able to fit more in but you’ll be able to see everything the moment you open that door.

FINALLY, DON’T FORGET TO ORGANIZE YOUR ACCESSORIES, THEY’RE JUST AS IMPORTANT!

An outfit is only complete when the right accessories are put together. Organizing you’re jewelry, bags, belts, and hats are part of your closet too and should be laid out accordingly. I always like having everything organized as well because it helps make my decisions so much easier. This is especially true with jewelry. Not only to make decisions but not having everything get into a tangled mess makes things so much easier.

Let me know in the comments below if you’d like me to make a post about how I organize my jewelry!

Once you go through all your things and have gone through the whole process make sure that you know what you’re gonna do with the clothing you no longer need or want. See if friends or family want anything that you can give away. You can also sell some items to make some extra cash but if all else fails, donating it is always a great way to get rid of it. You never want to throw away good clothing for nothing.

I really hope this way helpful for you guys! Please let me know in the comments below if you organized your closet and how it went, I’d really love to know!
